The Orange Sky

For the past couple of nights I have been mesmerized with images coming from the Altadena weather cam.  The images are generated from the site www.westphalfamily.com/weather.html where the gentleman there has mounted an Olympus C-5050Z on the roof of his home and pointed the camera at the mountains above Lake Avenue here in Altadena.

While downtown [...]

End of An Era

I have said this many times before but it bears repeating, I hated moving into Altadena.  There, I’ve said it.  Hated it, hated it, hated it.  I hated the vermin that visited my yard — I live close to a trail — I hated the oversized rat looking things — Opossums — I hated the [...]

Altadena: Park Bench Deli

I have been looking for a deli for a long time, a good, old-fashioned deli like the ones I used to frequent in Chicago.  Unfortunately, since moving to California, foods — particularly the pizzas — are nothing like what we had in Chicago.  I’m not complaining because I fully understood I would not be able [...]

Altadena: Murder, Fire. Lancaster: Murder, Fire

mage provided by the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department shows suspect Corey King, 18, who was arrested for investigation of murder Wednesday Sept. 10[/caption]
First, I need to explain something, I have this weird little spirit.  I believe my grandmother really wanted me to expand on this but personally, I really don’t want to see dead people [...]

Just Heard: Farm Fresh Is Now Closed

A friend just called to tell me Farm Fresh Market is now closed.  She went up after reading a previous entry here to discover the soul food merchant — more for the peach cobbler — and to visit Bessie’s Tacos.  While on the line with her, I checked the Pasadena Independent to find yes, it [...]

Well, Well, Well

Looks like the CHP has been very active in the area of late.  I heard the officer friendlies set up a sobriety check point last Saturday at Lincoln and Woodbury.  That’s a nice change of pace.  A co-worker of mine who recently moved into the area experienced this.  I have never encountered anything like it [...]

It’s The Economy

A beautiful design by Eric Lloyd Wright, grandson of Frank Lloyd Wright.  It’s a shame all he intended for the project was scratched when he died.  Unfortunately, the project as it stands is flawed in so many ways.
The Pasadena Star News has an article on Lincoln Crossing entitled “Altadena development still struggling“.  In the article [...]

Altadena Shooting Revisited

It appears there was not a shooting.  According to several reports, a 50-year-old Altadena man is being held in the death of his 19-year-old girlfriend who either fell or was pushed from a second-story window.
Jasmine Denson was found in the 2400 block of Lincoln Avenue about 5:30 p.m. Saturday and declared dead at Huntington Memorial [...]

Altadena Naked Crow Mountain Bike Challenge

[ August 3, 2008; 7:30 am to 12:00 pm. ]

A friend just alerted me to this and asked if I’ll be entering the mountain bike race.  I can’t even walk well uphill let alone ride a bike for 8.5 miles.  The answer is obviously no but I would like to check it out.

The second annual 8.5-mile “Naked Crow Mountain Bike Challenge” event will be [...]

Shooting in Altadena

A friend kept calling me this evening, waking me from a delicious sleep, to inquire if I knew anything about the incident on Lincoln Avenue.  I was asleep and hadn’t heard a thing but I did check in with the Altadenablog and found yes indeed, something did happen.  A woman was shot to death at [...]

Zorthian Ranch And Farm in Altadena Hits Vogue

First, for those who don’t know, there is a wonderful little place in the hills of Altadena called the Zorthian Ranch and Farm.  The farm was started by Col. Jirayr Hamparzoom Zorthian, an immigrant from Turkey, of Armenian parents, who showed considerable talent in drawing and painting.  His works are on record from that time [...]

The Obama Mural in Altadena

The Obama Mural in Altadena, originally uploaded by FemmeNoir.

The Pasadena Star News had a feature on the Obama mural at Wayne Nelson’s clothing store on Lincoln in Altadena. Artist Harmon Mandigo has added to it since I last saw it and it looks like there’s more to come.

24 Hour Fitness Across from 24 Hour McDonald’s

24. Hour Fitness, originally uploaded by FemmeNoir.

The 24-Hour Fitness is across from the now 24-Hour McDonald’s. It wasn’t always a 24-hour McD’s, Once the Magic Johnson Sport went in McD’s started tantalizing everyone on the equipment with their huge banners. Here you see why I’m here: Sweet Tea. It’s just wrong

Altadena NAACP Offers Scholarship Applications

The Altadena Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), through its Scholarship Program seeks to help increase the number of African Americans and other misrepresented minorities obtain an education in higher learning. By doing so, we help our nation address a critical need and a challenge to our future economic [...]

East Coast, West Coast Drama In Altadena

I’ll be honest, I have not participated in a lot of activities in Altadena sans the tree lighting ceremony at Christmas Tree Lane.  The reason for this is I work non-traditional hours — when everyone is sleeping, I’m awake.  When everyone is awake, I’m asleep.
From what I read at the Pasadena Star News there was [...]

Some of My Neighbors: Stonehill News

I love Stonehill News because they serve up the dish on some of my neighbors.  For instance, recently Smokey the Bear showed up over on Pinecrest.  I’m sure he was on an early morning fitness walk through the neighborhood and possibly, quite possibly he (or she) is considering a job as a mail bear.
Some months [...]

UPDATE: Reward Increased In Death of 90-Year-Old Evelyn Mosley

This story upsets me.  Not simply because it happened a short distance from where I live or the fact it happened in Altadena.  That upsets me, yes, but what upsets me more is an active, 90-year-old Evelyn Oletha Mosley was killed in the home she shared with her daughter and grandson a few days prior [...]

Lakeview Terrace: When The Oppressed Becomes The Oppressor

I was fascinated recently with an article I read in the Pasadena Star News entitled “Larry Wilson: New film not long on neighborly advice.”  To be blunt, I had some preconceived notions about the officer in the article being white, not black.  When I learned former LAPD officer Irsie Henry is an African American man [...]

Altadena Shooting

After the recent arrest of 55-year-old Donald Williams who had a collection of 60 guns in his home, this weekend 19-year-old Michael De La Torre of Pasadena was shot to death in the 100 block of Figueroa Drive in Altadena about 1 a.m. Saturday, June 28. De La Torre was pronounced dead at Huntington Hospital [...]

Ex-convict, Donald Williams, 55, of Altadena was arrested Tuesday after detectives obtained a warrant to search his home on North Fair Oaks Avenue in Altadena.  He was in custody Wednesday after authorities served a search warrant at his home and discovered more than 60 guns - from hunting rifles to a Tec-9 submachine gun (pictured [...]
