S.L.E. Lupus Foundation: Life Without Lupus -- For nearly 40 years, the S.L.E. Lupus Foundation has helped people with lupus and their families, funded lupus research, and raised awareness of this chronic illness.

vicodinNow that we have a Food & Drug Administration that is not forced to sit on its hands while people get sick and die, we are finally being told the truth about the dangerous pharmaceuticals out there.  Let me tell you, some of those over-the-counter (OTC) drugs will put you in a world of hurt.

Yesterday the news broke about a panel, assembled by the Food and Drug Administration, who voted 20 to 17 to advise the FDA to remove drugs like Vicodin and Percocet from the market.  These drugs combine acetaminophen with narcotics.  This same panel also advised the FDA to lower the maximum daily dose of acetaminophen in OTC and prescription medications, and to address the formulations and dosing recommendations for children.  Well it’s about time.

Acetaminophen, commonly used for its effectiveness in treating pain and fever, is also responsible for overdoses in 56,000 emergency room visits, 26,000 hospitalizations and 458 deaths during the 1990s, according to one study. Another study estimates that acetaminophen is the likely cause of most of the estimated 1,600 acute liver failures each year.  Imagine that.  Yes Tylenol and NyQuil, which also contains acetaminophen, can kill you.

Blacks More Likely To Die From Lupus

in Health, Lupus

HOSPITALISTS REVOLTWell, the Internet is buzzing with stories on Lupus and this article on Terra.com lists some important stats but first, there is this little tidbit and I wonder how they discovered this.  The first lines from the article state:  “Michael Jackson was diagnosed with lupus in 1986 after suffering other serious health problems. He had been struggling extreme fatigue, joint pain, and other ailments.” If this is true, the diagnosis came after Jackson’s Pepsi commercial accident in 1984 when lupus lesions were said to have been found in his scalp.

Moving on, in reporting on a 20-year study, CDC lupus expert Charles G. Helmick said:

There were 88 lupus deaths for every 10 million women in 1998, compared with 15 deaths for every 10 million men. That ratio, with women more than five times likelier than men to die from lupus, was fairly steady throughout the 20 years of the study, he said.

The study also found 137 lupus deaths per 10 million blacks in 1998, compared with 40 deaths per 10 million whites. That ratio, with blacks more than three times as likely to die from lupus, was also consistent throughout the 20 years of the study.

Incredible, 137 lupus deaths per 10 million blacks in 1998.  I’m curious what those numbers are now.

by A.D. OdomJune 30, 2009

Dr. Deepak Chopra

Your children are not your children. They are the sons and daughters of Life’s longing for itself. They came through you but not from you and though they are with you yet they belong not to you.
–Khalil Gibran
More people are talking about lupus as it relates to Michael Jackson.  I personally believe this [...]

by A.D. OdomJune 29, 2009

Note brace and tape on fingers

A friend called me last night after reading an article on People Magazine’s website quoting Dr. Deepak Chopra.  In the article, Chopra says Michael Jackson had lupus and he goes on to say even his son knew he had lupus.  This caused my friend to ask me if I thought [...]

I Am Of The Mende People

by A.D. OdomJune 27, 2009

My brother recently had a MatriClan analysis done — swab test inside of mouth — which determined his (and our) mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) shares the same ancestry of the Mende people of Sierra Leone.  Of course, being a cynic, my first thoughts were “well, who isn’t from Sierra Leone?”
Actually, many who have taken the test [...]

To Die With Dignity

by A.D. OdomJune 27, 2009

It’s funny, on Thursday when the news broke about Michael Jackson — by TMZ of all things — I found myself getting angry.  The more news or gossip that came out about MJ’s misfortune the angrier I got.  I ended up having to separate myself from the television, Twitter and the telephones because I was [...]

If We All Cry At The Same Time Tonight

Neda Soltani

The past few days have been hard on me emotionally because they have taken me along a hard path called memory lane, back to my youth and remembrances of days long gone.  Last Saturday I saw the heartbreaking video of an Iranian woman who was shot down in the streets of Iran.
One can easily [...]

Where In The World Is . . . .

by A.D. OdomJune 25, 2009

Well no, I ain’t Carmen Sandiego but a few friends have asked “where the H__ are you?”  Oh it has been a busy few days for me as I am feeling really good and strong since going on the little blue pills which, I might add, combined with the diuretics has taken 30 plus pounds [...]

Getting My Grill On

by A.D. OdomJune 18, 2009

A few weeks ago I pulled out my old grill, filled it with charcoal, and stirred up the pyromaniac within by lighting the coals and preparing the grill for some serious cooking.  I don’t know why I asked myself a stupid question but I did and that stupid question was “what’s with the charcoal?”  I’ve [...]

Got Shut Out From DTV?

by A.D. OdomJune 18, 2009

For those on fixed incomes, the poor, the elderly, and particularly the sick and shut-in, television is a way to connect with the world around us.  Free TV was a great option for those who could not — and still cannot — afford cable or satellite TV.  Unfortunately, as of last Friday, many are now [...]
