I am shocked. I just learned a woman I followed on YouTube, Domineque Banks (aka Longhairdontcare2011), passed away from complications related to Lupus on April 9, 2014. She was 27-years-old. Many of her followers on YouTube are saying her kidneys were affected, possibly nephritis, but from BlackGirlLongHair.com, a friend states the following.
According to her personal friend Macy Jimenez, Domineque had been a longtime sufferer of lupus, and had in recent months taken a turn for the worse. On the night of April 7 Domineque fell out of consciousness and later in the hospital was placed on life support. She passed away on the afternoon of April 9 after suffering a heart attack. Domineque is survived by her partner, sister, and a host of friends and family.
I found Longhairdontcare2011, Domineque Banks, on YouTube when I was going through my hair ordeal after chemo. I learned she too had lupus and since the theme of her video blog was natural hair, I began following her. After seeing her hair journey, and her healthy, long hair, I went natural and have not looked back.
Domineque was one of the original natural hair gurus on YouTube. I feel very fortunate to have seen this young woman. I’m an old dog but she taught me a few new tricks with simple products — nothing extravagant — combs and step-by-step instructions on natural hairstyles for African American women.
There are several women in the natural hair community doing memorials for her on YouTube. She will be missed. Her death and the death of Karyn Washington, founder of the blog For Brown Girls, who died of an apparent suicide, is shocking. They were both too young to die so soon.
